As part of our Meet Motel series, we catch up with Claire Portsmith - Designer and Trend Forecaster at Motel.
How long have you worked for Motel?
I started working for Motel part time in the Motel Bristol shop which I loved (I remember the day I was asked to come in for an interview I was so hyped!). Wow that was 2006! I later enquired to do some work experience with the design team which lead to some freelance design and research. Fast forward a few fun and fantastic years, I’m now a Designer and Trend forecaster for Motel Rocks!
What’s the best part about your job?
I LOVE IT! My favorite part is building the themes and concepts, after researching and hunting new trends, getting inspired by vintage garments and people watching. I totally love going through it all and bouncing all of my ideas with Willliam (my boss) and deciding what’s going to be next.
And the worst?
Hmmm when something you really believe in doesn’t work out.
How did you get involved in Fashion?
I've always loved clothes and I love the relationship we have with our clothes. Whether its how we like to be seen, how they feel or why we value them. But it’s Motel who I have to thank for bringing me into the wonderful world of the rag trade and I'm truly grateful. Thanks Motel.
What's your favourite Motel piece of all time?
Jeeez! This is hard! They are like little babies! I'm more likely to have favourite prints or if we find or develop new fabrics, including the process behind the garments. I love the flocked baroque we developed and flocked wave, this was a whole new achievement for us. I love the Mighty and Mini cross print. I love that the idea came from a woven purse and we created a print from there. The fun, sequin embellished, motif T-shirts and I love Motel vintage. I love that every piece is hand picked, washed unpicked and re made - that’s so cool, but my favourite piece of all time? Ok, I'll try narrow it down. It will be either the Jordan Jean in Black and White stripe, or the Zabby dress in hourglass placement, or Darcy jacket in foil print, everything in italiano print... oh this is so hard! Ok the Carly shirt in palm leaf - that shirt is ace!
Who is your style icon?
I wouldn’t say I have a style Icon but I do like Alice Goddard she always looks great oh and Catherine Baba such a babe!
What inspires you?
Everything! I love getting about I get really inspired traveling and exploring new places and love being exposed to new things and love to learn. I can find inspiration from anything.
Who is on your iPod right now?
Baccara - Yes Sir, I Can Boogie.
What are you most excited about for Motel in the future?
