Rhianna Ellington 2015
Motel Designer Collective: Rhianna Ellington
We have teamed up with textile designer Rhianna Ellington to create an exclusive collection of styles inspired by botanics and the dark side of nature. Freelance print designer Rhianna is known for her bold style and vibrant prints and for this collaborative line Rhianna has moved away from her typical colour spectrum and shows a darker take on her signature botanical inspired prints. The range is the first of the Motel Designer Collective series that will see us teaming up with both up-and-coming and established print designers to create limited edition ranges for Motel.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND, HOW DID YOU GET INTO PRINT DESIGN?
I graduated in June 2013 with a degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds College of Art. When I was at college I did a print making module and fell in love with screen-printing. From a young age I always wanted a career in fashion so I looked into a way of combining the two. Straight after I graduated, I moved to London to do a pattern design internship for fashion designer Holly Fulton, helping to design prints for her spring summer 2014 collection. From there I decided to go freelance and set up my brand.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST BIG ‘BREAK’ INTO THE INDUSTRY?
My first freelance job was for The Whitepepper, a UK online fashion label, for their spring summer 2014 collection. This was my first big break but I also feel I like I am about to have a bigger one! This collection with Motel Rocks is my first collaboration with my name on which is really exciting for me.
HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR DESIGN STYLE IN A SENTENCE?
Vibrant botanical layers.
WHERE DO YOU SOURCE MOST OF YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?
A lot of my design work is inspired by natural curiosities. I always begin my design projects by visiting museums, archives, and by creating my own natural collections by drying and pressing flowers.
WHAT OTHER BRANDS/DESIGNERS DO YOU ASPIRE TO?
I don’t really aspire to anyone, as I don’t want to end up being over influenced by anyone else. Some designers that inspire me are Ashley Williams, Celine, Simone Rocha, Giles and Jeremy Scott.
WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ON WORKING ON A COLLABORATIVE RANGE WITH MOTEL?
I have been a fan of Motel for over 10 years and have watched them grow into the successful brand that they are today. I think that our aesthetic and customer are very similar, making my patterns perfect for the Motel brand.
WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE STYLES IN THE COLLECTION?
I love the Teddy playsuit, the relaxed silhouette and super-low dipped back and sides make it a really stand out piece. I’m also a big fan of the Parma dress with the flared drop hemline, it’s such an easy to wear style and a great transeasonal piece.
WHO IS THE RHIANNA ELLINGTON CUSTOMER?
They are happy-go-lucky and not afraid to clash colours and prints.
