An exclusive interview with Ozlem Esen - Stylist for Motel.

How long have you worked with Motel?

I have worked for Motel for around 4-5 years now. Originally I was hired to re-invent the image, since then I have been styling and designing for their collections.

Briefly run us through a typical shoot day.

Phone calls, mania, suitcases, racks, models, music, photographers, make-up, mayhem, laughter, colour, co-ordination, stress, culling, more laughter, clothing overdose, coffee overdose…you know, a typical day in fashion!

What advice would you have for anyone wanting to get into styling?

Stick to what you love and believe in. Don’t just follow trends, create them. Make the shoots, fun as the energy of a shoot has a way of prevailing into the photos. Be organised, take control. Get an assistant.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everything and anything… walking around the chaotic, colourful streets of Bali, a print on an insect, a new song, a way in which a person walks, a silhouette - I find it hard to switch my brain off. I find beauty and inspiration in all things around me at all times.

Name one item no stylist should be without.

Can I name two? Chicken fillets for the skinny models and gaffa tape to help structure outfits. Oh and head props!!!

What does fashion mean to you?

Fashion foremost to me means an expression of ones self. It is not about how much an outfit costs, what is in ‘fashion’ or what celebrities are wearing. Fashion is in the way you feel in an outfit, the way in which you walk, hold yourself. It is about pushing the boundaries, changing with the way you feel. I am never limited to one look or style. I love seeing people in over the top outfits with confidence. I often see a person and based on what they are wearing, gravitate into wanting to know more about them. Fashion is just your insides expressed however you want on the outside.

What trends do you see emerging for Autumn '13?

I am hoping to see more toned down colours and prints. Stilettos as opposed to chunky heels. Slick, sexy darker tones and a little more defined class as opposed to skin (as much as I’m all for skin!)

How would you define the Motel style?

Fun, colourful, cheerful, confident, sexy...

We love your style. What's your favourite item you own and why?

A hat I purchased in Tokyo. No matter how dull an outfit is it manages to take it to a whole new level. I can’t stop wearing it I wish I had one in every colour!

What has been your favourite Motel shoot to date?

A toss-up between the country side shoot we created in Bali (super challenging) and the one we shot at Maroubra beach in Sydney.

Lastly what’s your favourite track at the moment?

Anything from Angel Haze.
